(M.F.A., painting, 2012)
Jennifer Small is a painter and visual designer whose work is about elevating banality through representational abstraction. Each element within her compositions is inspired by a recorded observation during her movement through everyday routine. The observations become building blocks for constructing an autobiographical story of time and place as well as making a connection between the quotidian and fine art. Each space combines hard edges, flat color, patterning and painterly applications to represent the complexities of mundanity. Small has exhibited her work in Washington, D.C.; New York, New York; Richmond, Virginia; Savannah, Georgia; and Chicago, Illinois. Originally from Pennsylvania, she relocated to Chicago in 2013, where she currently lives with her boyfriend and dog.
