(M.F.A., painting, 2013)
William Irving Singer’s work addresses itself to the present by engaging critically with cultural forms of the past. His brightly colored, and often heavy impasto, paintings reference historic subjects pulled from a variety of sources, examined through a lens of abstraction. Figures, forms, and reimagined scenes from a distant past find expression through gestural mark making and a playful use of painterly materials. Singer has held residencies at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in New York as well as Red Bull House of Art in Detroit, Michigan. His most recent solo exhibition, “From the Depths Above,” was presented at SCAD’s 2017 deFINE Art, at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah. Singer currently lives and works in Boulder, Colorado.
